Family geocachingGetting Started in Geocaching

Geocaching is a fun, outdoor game played using GPS units. Groups of players use specific coordinates to find hidden treasures—containers with items inside. These coordinates are published so that many different treasure hunters can find these caches by using the coordinates and their GPS units.

You’ll find the cache coordinates for the Great Northwoods Treasure Hunt here. But to access these coordinates, you’ll need to first register as a new geocacher at www.geocaching.com, the online headquarters for the worldwide geocaching community.

The basic rules to the game of geocaching are simple:

  1. If you take something out of the cache, you must leave something
  2. You must write about your visit to the cache in the logbook (which you’ll find in the cache.)

The real challenge of geocaching lies in using your GPS to find these caches. Playing the game with friends and family, discovering new places and having fun are what make geocaching such a great outdoor activity.
