1) This was the last find of the day - and quite an adventure it was. I was looking for alternatives to the river as well. Thought the ice was not reliable enough. This was a challenge. Deep snow as well.
2) FTF! What an adventure! First, chr and I drove to the east side of the river…nope! We were about 200′ from the cache, but no way to cross. So, we ventured around the other way. Got to the Lumberjack Trailhead, and walked in a mile…chr was pooped, and it was obvious we’d have to walk 6 miles round trip in the snow to do this one. So, I took chr home for a nap, while I thought about it. Decided to just run across the river; how bad could wet boots be? I located the most likely spot, and fell thru a bit of ice, but made it across with little trouble. Came back across at another spot and got a little wetter, but the effort and risk was worth it. (At least for me; don’t try this at home!)

1) Lovely lake. WPee marked it on GPS for kayaking latter this summer. GNWTH is certainly showing us many places to come back and enjoy.
2) After the Easter Cache Hunt in Boulder, BMW57 and I did a few of the caches in the Great Northwoods Treasure Hunt. This was a pretty little picnic area.
It’s been enjoyable getting to know the Boulder area a little better through the Great Northwoods Treasure Hunt! Thanks for placing these caches.
3) Today, we are out looking for some of the Boulder Junction area caches we want to find for the Great Northwoods Treasure Hunt - 2008 edition. We had stopped in briefly at the start of the Easter Cache Hunt event hosted by the Boulder C of C and wanted to cache some while the egg caches we being hunted. As we left the SUV we heard the bizarre sounds of one giant woodpecker! Now, I am no expert on birds. But, this thing was obnoxious from the start! And, it was huge to see this guy moving around the dead tree just drilling away like CRAZY! Now, my bird book was at home (you know the one…that little green one) so I thought my best chance to ID this thing was to SHOOT it and then figure it. OK, not that kind of shoot….with the camera! The Blondie Bloodhound would never let me do that! Then, while I figure out how to work the digital zoom of this camera (note: I would NEVER read an instruction manual) a giant LIGHT BULB went off over my head like in a CARTOON! Hey, wait a minute. That’s it, everything I learned as a kid came from Saturday morning cartoons. OK, let’s think. Yes. It’s got to be a “Dryocopus pileatus.” Mystery SOLVED! I’ll post a picture for you bird lovers out there. Now, on to the cache. It was sitting out in clear view that even a cross-eyed Dryocopus pileatus could have spotted it -as did I before the Blondie Bloodhound could.

1) Good little touch of history. Was greeted with a little guy covered in the snow. I’ll call him the mad keeper of the cache.
2) I’ve hiked the nature trail a few times, but have never been over by the logging camp site. I’ll have to come again without the snow to see the evidence of the camp.

1) Up here from Milwaukee caching the Warrior Contest! Beautiful spot.
2) Today, we are out looking for some of the Boulder Junction area caches we want to find for the Great Northwoods Treasure Hunt - 2008 edition. We had stopped in briefly at the start of the Easter Cache Hunt event hosted by the Boulder C of C and wanted to cache some while the egg caches we being hunted. We may have zoomed across this landing strip a couple of years ago on our snowmobiles. It would be neat to be here in the summer and watch the seaplanes taxi up the ramp from the lake. We geared up with our boots and “Geo-Gaiters” for this one as we had seen the past posts about the deep snow here. Once we got up from the road things went pretty smoothly.

1) Enjoyed the find. The first time we were in Boulder Junction to ride the bicycle paths, we also enjoyed watching the activities at the nearby skateboard park.
2) We’ve been to Boulder Junction many times and played at the park nearby but we didn’t even know that this place existed! Cool place and thanks for giving us a reason to stop.

Thank you for your part in planning the Geocaching Contests of 2007 and 2008. My friend and I participated in the 2007 contest and were up there again this weekend “power caching” the 2008 March Warrior contest. We enjoyed your sites and even earned a March Warrior prize bag! Thanks!

Was fun coming back to find this one! I spend quite a bit of time at the restaurant that was formerly close to this location!
WOW - think this was the smallest cache we have found so far! Actually touched the cache twice before I realized what I was touching!!

This is one of the reasons I don’t live in Hodag Town any more. Even though this mill has provided much needed employment for people in this city for generations, I couldn’t abide the emissions, which, especially on Sundays, drifted down our lovely tree-lined street, and made even sweech cough and ask, “what is that bad smell, daddy?” I was told that if I didn’t like it, I was free to move…so I (we) did. It’s still fun to come to the home of the hodag … where I spent several years “on the air” at WOBT, playing vinyl records, and broadcasting the “Macker” as he did the Hodag play-by-play. “Win or lose, it’s always a good idea to back those Rhinelander Hodags!” The radio station is torn down, our old house has vinyl siding, DeByles is for rent, and there’s a super Wal-mart where the field used to be, but the mill steams on. What fun. Perfect setting. Excellent weather. And, most of all…. GREAT geo-folks!!
This was my first Geo event and the second one for the Blondie Bloodhound. Our thanks to the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce for hosting this first class event. THANKS!
Also, a huge THANKS for the “Boulder Bucks” which we used that evening (after watching the Badger basketball team notch another NCAA tourney victory) at JJ’s in Boulder Junction. Tasty food. We had never been there before but, the Blondie Bloodhound wants to return for more.
It was my pleasure to meet so many folks and to put some faces to geo-names.
Best to all,
Sparse Grey Hackle and The Blondie Bloodhound

Shr was in town to get braces on her teeth this morning (!!!) so I had a couple of hours … of course, I loaded up the Garmin to help pass the time. (I think my wallet is more sore than her mouth) This is our old neighborhood! I used to push sweech down these very sidewalks, oh, 25 years ago (yikes) and when I was a Jaycee, we did much of the landscaping, benches, paving stones, and yes, WE planted these bushes that I am now scrounging through looking for a geocache. It all comes around, doesn’t it? Felt a bit odd as cars and people went by, wondering what that dude was doing in the bushes. (Thanks, Cgadoh!) But, I finally came up with the nab. No log, so I added a slip of paper until one can be placed in the micro. SL/ TNLN / TFTC!
